February is American Healthy Heart Awareness month and living healthy is part of the program. One way to improve your heart health is to practice a diet rich in vegetables that contains lots of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that can protect your heart and make it stronger. Here are some heart healthy vegetables to add to your diet that will reduce the risk of heart related illnesses.
Beets. Lowers blood pressure and strengthens not only your hearts but your lungs as well. Packed with vitamins and beta carotene.
Bell Peppers. It contains folate, a nutrient that can lower homocysteine to reduce heart disease risk.
Broccoli. Has a high content of vitamin C that can make you less susceptible to both non-fatal and fatal heart diseases.
Carrots. RIch in antioxidants called carotenoids that can combat free radical that cause heart disease
Garlic. Contains phytochemicals that boosts immunity, keeps our blood pressure check, helps regulate fat cells and protect our cardiovascular system. It has anti-inflammatory benefits as well.
Leafy Greens. Excellent source of magnesium that can lower risk of sudden health failure, specially in women.
Onions. Rich source of sulphur containing phytochemicals that can reduce cholesterol level that prevents heart disease.
Potatoes. High in potassium and can help your body maintain healthy blood pressure to prevent increase risk of congestive heart failure and stroke caused by high blood pressure.
Squash. Includes vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and folate that is beneficial to your heart
Tomatoes. Rich in lycopene, which is a carotenoid that is an antioxidant and has proven to be effective in preventing heart disease.

The quality and taste is definitely way better as it's harvested at it's peak a few hours (not days or weeks) before you take it home. This month of February, we are also participating the national CSA Sign-up Day. A survey has been conducted and this month is the most popular month that members join the CSA Program and February 28th of this year is dubbed as #CSADay.
This is an important time of year for us to get new members signed up because we are in the process of making the investments that will result in a successful harvest many months from now where you, as a CSA Member, will benefit in return.
